Steelers beat Titans
The Pittsburgh Steelers shut down Eddie George and ended a seven-game losing streak against the Tennessee Titans.
Jerome Bettis ran for two touchdowns and Kordell
Stewart threw for a season-high 232 yards as the
Steelers extended their Monday night home
winning streak to nine games with a 34-7 rout in
front of the largest football crowd in Pittsburgh history.
Bettis carried 19 times for 62 yards as Pittsburgh (5-1) moved one game in front
of the second-place Cleveland Browns in the AFC Central.
Stewart completed 13-of-21 passes and Plaxico Burress caught six for a
career-high 151 yards as Pittsburgh improved to 2-0 at home in front of 63,763 at
Heinz Field.
â€I think things have been pretty well all season,†Stewart said. â€We’re going to go
to the passing game when we need to. Tonight they stacked it, eight players up,
and our receivers showed what they’ve been able to show in practice. Plaxico
made a couple of catches early, so it was really easy just to keep going to him. I
just hope to be able to continue as we have.â€
The 6-5 Burress showed his athleticsm with a 43-yard
reception on a ball he caught while falling after it was
dropped by Tennessee cornerback Samari Rolle. On the
next play, Bettis took a pitch and rumbled seven yards into
the end zone for a 24-7 lead with 10:18 left in the third
quarter.
â€The way I look at it, after 11 games last year I went
down. I played five games already this season, so my
rookie season is over,†Burress said. â€Tonight for me
started my second year. I’m just trying to play it like
practice. It felt very good to get the crowd in it.â€
George continued to struggle, gaining just 13 yards on 10
rushes before sitting out the second half with a
hyperextended left knee. One of only two players in NFL
history to rush for at least 1,200 yards in each of his first five seasons, the 1995
Heisman Trophy winner has just 303 yards through six games.
â€It’s very frustrating right now when you try to help the team and you can’t do
anything to really help the team,†George said. â€Every time I go out there,
something’s tweaking or something gets injured again. You’ve heard that old
saying, ‘When it rains it pours,’ right now, we’re in the middle of a hurricane.â€
Steve McNair was 14-of-23 for 175 yards and was intercepted twice as
Tennessee (2-4) lost to the Steelers for the first time since September 28, 1997,
the first season after the franchise moved from Houston.
Pittsburgh scored on its first possession of the game as Bettis capped a 10-play,
78-yard drive with a one-yard plunge 6:23 into the first quarter.
The Titans evened the score five seconds into the second quarter when tight end
Frank Wycheck spun away from rookie linebacker Kendrell Bell and caught a
four-yard pass from McNair in the back of the end zone. The catch came on third
down as the Titans were successful on their first four situations. But they were
0-for-11 thereafter.
â€It was a big game, it was a national TV game,†Wycheck said. â€We were very
confident going into the game, we had a good game plan. We matched up really
well and we were going good for a while. We got a couple of bad breaks and got
down a couple scores. You have to start chucking the ball then, and that’s just
not us.â€
Safety Brent Alexander intercepted McNair at the
Tennessee 36 and six plays later, Stewart
avoided a sack by linebacker Randall Godfrey and
threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Hines
Ward for a 14-7 lead with 5:56 left in the second
quarter.
Tennessee had a chance to cut the deficit, but
Joe Nedney’s 48-yard field goal attempt bounced
off the right upright with just under three
minutes left.
Amos Zereoue had a 17-yard run and Burress
caught an 11-yard pass to set up Kris Brown’s
42-yard field goal with 23 seconds remaining,
giving the Steelers a 17-7 halftime lead.
Brown booted a 27-yard field goal with 1:51 to play in the third quarter, increasing
Pittsburgh’s lead to 27-7. On the ensuing kickoff, linebacker John Fiala recovered
Derrick Mason’s fumble at the Titans’ 29. After Bettis lost a yard, Burress had a
28-yard catch and Stewart sprinted around right end for a two-yard TD to make it
34-7 on the first play of the final period.
The Titans drove to the Pittsburgh 1 with just under three minutes to go, but
nose tackle Kendrick Clancy intercepted McNair.
For this upcoming season the Steelers have Kordell Stewart being the main arm, with Tommy Maddox backing him up. IN the back feild we have starting Jerome "the Bus" Bettis. Our WRs arnt very good but our Defence is obvously pumped up and ready to go with 4 sacks, and a fumble recovery, 67 yard touchdown!

Tommy Maddox takes the #2 QB position over Tee Martin.
Tommy Maddox was the MVP of the XFL.
I think that if Maddox is #2 then he must have worked hard, and earned it. If Tee would have worked harder than Tee would be #2, but it seems that Maddox worked harder so he is #2.
Jerome Bettis is the starting RB for the Steelers this year. He had 7 1000 yard seansons in the past 8 years
He has also recently rushed for over 10,000 yards!
And in the game vs the bucs he also threw his first NFL touchdown pass
